One of the questions I get MOST often from folks who are dipping their toes in the waters of SEO: how many times per week do I need to be blogging in order to see SEO results?
And I swear, my answer always surprises people. They usually expect me to tell them that they need to be blogging 3x/week in order to be “good at SEO,” or to reach their ideal clients—but god, does creating 12 blog posts per month sound EXHAUSTING (unless you’re like me, and your entire career is based around blogging).
As a creative entrepreneur, chances are that you don’t want your life to be based around blogging. And it shouldn’t be. It should be based around the experience you deliver to your clients, serving them above and beyond and doing what you love—NOT sitting at your computer, staring at a blank screen as you attempt to write 3 blog posts per week like some corporate SEO bro told you to.
So today, I wanted to give you my answer + my own personal opinion about how often business owners should be blogging for SEO purposes, and I promise it’s not going to be as often as you might think!
If you want to actually make blogging a sustainable, long-term marketing strategy for your business, I personally recommend starting with just ONE blog post per month.
You heard me right: per month. Not per week!
I know, I know—you might want to do more than that at first; your hustle-culture-trained brain might be telling you that that isn’t enough, and that you need to do more, more more! Or another SEO educator might actually be telling you that you need to do more in order to find success.
But here’s why I believe that creative entrepreneurs should only be starting with one blog per month!
When it comes to Google, there are two things you should remember:
Above all else, Google values when its users post fresh, consistent content that attempts to solve searcher’s problems. Especially with the rise of AI content and other low-quality blog posts that are being written by folks who don’t really know what they’re doing, Google is more focused than EVER on prioritizing + elevating high quality blog posts in the rankings. By consistently creating content that searchers are looking for + find helpful, you’re showing Google that you’re the authority on the subjects you’re talking about, which is the whole goal of SEO blogging!
Sure! Maybe in an ideal world where you have 24 hours a day to work on blogging, you’d be publishing a couple of killer blog posts per week to serve your audience.
But if you’ve never blogged, or you’ve barely blogged in the past, trying to go from 0 to 4 blogs per month is just setting yourself up to fail.😬
I like to think of it in the same way I think about exercise: I recently started doing some strength training, which I’ve NEVER done before in my life. Instead of starting out with 5-6 days per week of training, which I could maybe keep up for a week or two, I’m starting with just 3 days a week, which feels very doable to me. I’m starting small and slow so that I can start working these new muscles that I’ve never worked before, so that I can get comfortable with the terms (sets? reps? supersets?) and the equipment, and create a routine out of it.
If I were to instead jump right into 6 days of training per week without having any experience with these types of workouts, machines, equpiment, terms, or any experience moving these muscles, I would probably give up quiiiick and/or injure myself. No doubt about it.
It’s the same with blogging: starting slow and small (and then even slower & smaller than you think you need to) will allow you to start working your blogging muscles; to start getting a feel for what your ideal clients are looking for; to start figuring out the most efficient + effective workflow to follow. And THEN you can work up to publishing more frequently if you want to—or not, and you can just stick to once per month! Because publishing one killer blog is a thousanddd times better than publishing no blogs because you bit off more than you could chew, and you planned for 5 blogs, and then ended up doing none, and then you feel bad about it, and then the same thing happens next month. . . and the cycle continues.
TL;DR: I would much rather see you create one, in-depth, crazy valuable resource every month (or even every two!) than try to push out low-quality, meh blogs that don’t really shine or have any strategy/intention.
I posted a Reel about this the other day, and here’s one of the comments from a past student of mine—I’m so proud of her and the amazing work she’s been putting in!🥹
Whenever I teach an SEO masterclass or release a new piece of education, I often see you guys getting SO many blogs done right away + being super excited to blog—-which is amazing and it always makes me so happy!! Trust me, I understand the hyperfixation 😅 But chances are that it won’t last forever, which is why I recommend scheduling your blog posts ahead of time if you do write multiple at once.
Let’s say that one month, you have a LOT of extra time and you really want to knock out multiple blogs—photographers, this might be accurate during your slow season! You can totally batch work and get multiple blogs prepped at once; in fact, if you’re feeling stoked on blogging, I recommend taking advantage of that energy and using it to get as MANY (quality) blogs done as possible. Then, instead of publishing them all at once, schedule them out to be published in advance 1-2x/month! This way, you have great content coming out consistently, and future you will thank current you for doing all the heavy lifting 😉
Wondering how to go about adding 1 blog per month to your already busy AF schedule? Here are three different ways to go about it!
If it would feel more attainable to you to break up the blog post into smaller, more attainable, bite size chunks, this is the way I’d recommend doing it!
This method is my personal favorite, because you get to check off a win each week as you complete a part of the blogging process. I recommend dedicating 1-2 hours to blogging on WEDNESDAY’s, because that’s when I host my free Blog-A-Longs! These are 2-hour virtual co-working sessions where we get shit done together, making sure you stay accountable for the blogging tasks you’ve committed to each week. My community loooves these Blog-A-Longs SO much (and so do I!), so they’re the perfect excuse to batch out a little time for blogging each week 🙂
Maybe it would work better with your schedule to split up a blog post into the course of one week, rather than spreading it out over a month. This is actually the method I use in my Better Blogging Membership; we have one dedicated “Sprint Week” every month, where each day, we dedicate 2ish hours to a specific set of objectives/a specific part of one full blog post! You could set aside 1 hour a day, 2 hours a day, whatever you need in order to have enough time to complete your blog by the end of the week.
Here’s how I’d recommend splitting up your days:
⭐️ PRE-WORK: Pick your blog post topic (getting this done the week before is a great idea!)
⭐️ MONDAY: SEO prep + building your blog post outline*
*Quick hack: if you want to essentially skip this portion of your blog post, you can grab one of my Plug N’ Play Blog Templates, where I’ve built in-depth outlines for you! These templates will also make your copywriting days 100x easer + quicker (and you’ll have less staring-at-a-blank-screen moments), because you’ll have a TON of prompts in front of you to help you figure out wtf to write.
⭐️ TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Writing your copy (this is the part of the blog that will likely take you the longest!)
⭐️ THURSDAY: Selecting your images + building your blog post in your website
⭐️ FRIDAY: Prepping promotional content + planning out how to want to repurpose your blog content
Schedule your blog to be published the next Monday, and then spend that next week sharing the blog post with your audience on social media!
If you’d like to have accountability when it comes to getting your blog post done, we would LOVE to have you join the Better Blogging Membership, and have you attend our monthly Sprint Weeks! In addition to these dedicated hours every month, you’ll receive specific action steps from me to ensure you complete every part of the blogging process correctly, as well as access to our private Slack channel where we brainstorm ideas, share feedback, ask questions, co-work, and more. You even get to submit your monthly blog posts directly to me for feedback + review! It’s a pretty dang special group if I do say so myself, and just LOOK at this huge win one of our members had recently 🥹 💖
(BBL is our inside joke name for BBM. Maybe I should start saying things like “Wanna elevate your blogs and make ‘em extra juicy? Join BBM/BBL!” 🤣🍑)
Finally, if you’re the type of person who likes to just start a task and get it done, you can knock out your whole blog post in one day! Pick one day out of the month to complete your entire blog, and then maybe set aside an hour or two the day before it goes live to do any last-minute fixes/prep.
If you take only ONE THING from this blog post, let it be this: start smaller & slower than you think you need to in order to best set yourself up for success. You’ve got this!!
