If you have killer blog posts on your website but no bookings to show for it, fear not: you’re in the right place!
Let me guess:
Your content is fan-fucking-tastic. You write killer titles that hook customers in right away. You’ve optimized every image, every header, every part of the Yoast plugin for SEO. You’re ranking high on Google for your target keywords. You might even be getting a ton of organic impressions & clicks on Google Search Console (woohoo!). Buuut the numbers aren’t turning into anything real, and that can be VERY discouraging.
While there are many benefits to blogging besides SEO, I’m guessing that you started blogging because you wanted to improve your organic traffic. To spend less time on social media, and more time focusing on the parts of your business that really fuel you—because your website is constantly working for you behind the scenes. The DREAM is that your blog eventually becomes your #1 source of inquiries. . . so what happens when it doesn’t?
Disclaimer before we dive in: There are SO many factors that go into your SEO results, and I’m only touching the surface in this blog post!
Disclaimer #2: I’ll be talking about service-based businesses in this blog post, who receive inquiries through a contact form of some sort. However, this also applies to product-based businesses who aren’t seeing conversions on products from their blog posts!
First, let’s look at the journey your customer is taking once they land on your website:
A potential client makes a search on Google
⬇️
They find & click on your website
⬇️
They read your killer blog post. Yay!!
But somewhere along the way after that, they drop off and exit your website 😟And that’s frustrating as fuckkk. You worked SO HARD to just *get* them to your website organically, and then you don’t even get anything from it?!
Unfortunately, ranking on Google + getting them to your site is only half the work 🙃 I know, it’s annoying! I wish this wasn’t the case, and that every time you published an amazing blog post, you magically received the endless stream of inquiries you deserve!
The first step to solving this problem is figuring out where they’re getting stuck, and what’s stopping them from submitting an inquiry. Here are a few things that could be happening:
If a customer reads your blog post and isn’t given direction on where to go next, chances are they’ll just exit your website and say goodbye forever! People need to be told what to do and where to go next, otherwise they might leave and find somebody else who gives them a clear next step. YOU have to be the one to tell them what the next step in their customer journey is!
A few ways you can subtly (or directly) guide your clients to where you want them to go:
Another reason why customers might read your blog post and then ghost your website? They simply didn’t find the solution they were looking for. This might happen because they’re just not your ideal client, OR because you weren’t giving them what they needed quick enough.
If they’re not your ideal client, that’s okay! Nothing you can do about it—they’ll go find a better fit somewhere else.
If they didn’t find what they needed fast enough, this means you need to improve the structure of your blog post. My biggest tip is to place the most important info toward the top of your blog so that they can easily + quickly find what they went to Google for in the first place. Then, add a CTA in case they get what they need and are ready to hop off your site—give them a chance to stick around and learn more.
The third reason your potential clients aren’t inquiring after reading your blogs is that they’re not fully convinced you’re the right fit for them. Again, this could simply be because you, well, aren’t the right fit for them—but if they are in your target audience, then it’s YOUR job to make sure they know that.
Your blog copy (and the rest of your site copy!) should either immediately attract or repel everybody who lands on your website. If they’re unsure, it means you’re not being clear enough about who you are for, and not for! They need to be able to easily self-identify as your target customer, or NOT, and that starts with your blog posts.
Don’t try to sound like everybody else, or optimize your copy to SEO hell so that it doesn’t even sound like you—your blog posts should not only be informational and optimized, but also a way for clients to truly connect with you right off the bat.
Here are a few signs you might be confusing your customers/not making your brand clear enough in your blog posts:
A huge problem I see in the blogging world is writing blog posts that aren’t directed toward your ideal clients, and then complaining when your ideal clients aren’t inquiring. Often times, if your organic impressions and clicks are high but you’re not seeing many leads, it means you’re not reaching the right people.
This can happen when you choose blog topics that your ideal clients aren’t searching for, or when you’re aiming for TOO large an audience that you’re not actually speaking to your people.
Think about it: if you write a blog post about a super broad topic, aimed at a super broad keyword (such as “United States wedding venues,” you’re going to be reaching a huge audience of people who are searching “United States wedding venues.” That’s great, but if those people aren’t actually your target clients. . . those numbers don’t matter.
This is why I like to create my clients’ blog strategy with a balance of both broad, highly-searched topics AND niche topics with a lower search volume. I dive deeper into this topic in this IG carousel!
If you have blog posts with SEO, but your website SEO isn’t up to the same level, that can be a HUGE issue. Blogging is only one aspect of improving your SEO, and both your blogs + website optimization go hand-in-hand: you can’t see SEO success in one without the other. The rest of your website also needs to be searchable, readable, easy to navigate, and part of a clearly defined journey for your customers!
⭐️ If you feel like your website copy is missing the mark, I’m super excited to announce that I’m expanding into website copy this fall/winter! I’m fully booked as of now, but be sure to get on my waitlist for first dibs on any new openings.
Wanna know a secret? If you’re not asking the right questions in your contact form, you might be getting leads from blogging without even knowing it!
I know that soooo many of the people I work with aren’t doing this, and it’s making them believe that they’re not receiving any leads from their blog posts.
What you need to do ASAP:
➡️ Add “Google” or “blog posts” as a lead source on your contact form! PLEASE!
When you ask inquiries how they found you, you probably have options for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, etc. But if you don’t have blog posts on there, or at LEAST Google, then you’re never going to have any idea if anybody finds you through a blog post 🤷🏼♀️
I recommend doing one of two things:
And bonus points if you ask them to mention a specific blog post (if they can remember)—that way, you know exactly which one brought them to you.
If you don’t offer up the option, most organic inquiries will probably just say they found you through Google in general, or they won’t even remember that they found you through a blog post—only that it led them to your Instagram, and that’s when they decided to inquire.
There are MANY more potential reasons why your blog posts aren’t converting into leads, but these are a few of the big ones. This is why it’s superrrr important to not only optimize your blog structure & copy, but ALSO to make sure your entire website is killer!
Whether that means you outsource your website copy, update your end-of-blog-post CTA’s, or elevate the client journey your site provides, there are a ton of little tweaks you can make to encourage inquiries + encourage conversions.
Happy blogging!
